This morning I headed off to the Wawel Royal Castle near Old Town. You hike up a hill and get great views of the river area and beyond. From there I walked around Old a Town a little bit more before heading back to the hostel to be picked up for a tour of Auschwitz and Birkenau. The tour was 6 hours long including drive time to get there. It was scorching hot out - 31 degrees, feels like 37 kinda thing, with minimal air conditioning in the van that picked us up. It was more so blowing hot air on us. The day was a very somber one. It was very hard to actually fathom what had gone on there. We walked through one of the old gas chambers and gave a moment of silence. It was very horrifying to be standing in there and seeing how everything was set up.
Once back at the hostel we were all in need of a cold beer so we went for dinner and a beer. I had a delicious Greek salad since I've been craving them ever since Greece! It wasn't the same in Poland though obviously. We then got all ready and headed out to catch our 10 pm night train.
We were praying for air conditioning, but alas, there was none. There was 6 of us to a bunk so it quickly turned into a sweaty half naked sauna like gathering - and not in a good way.
We made the most of it though! We snuck into the next carriage which was first class (meaning air conditioned) and made sure to stay there as long as possible, as well as use their washroom when needed.
