Last night after dinner, a few of us wanted to go and check out the funicular and possibly hike up past it to the Prague "Eiffel Tower" for the sunset. We got to the funicular and bought our ticket to go up only to find out it was stuck halfway and they were working to fix it. That's when we decided to simply hike from the very bottom to the top. There were so many different paths going every which way that we just guessed where to go judging by where the tower was. I would run ahead and say if we needed to go back and take the other path. A good hour later after hiking straight up in our flimsy sandals, we finally found it. Then it was another 300 steps to the top and the sun was just setting. I ran to the top and made it just in the nick of time!
We also saw tons of people out on paddle boats on the river around sunset time. It's the thing to do here. It looked really beautiful.
Sleeping last night was next to impossible due to the heat, even with 2 fans blowing. When I woke up I read a message my mom had sent me asking about a cubist lamp post here in Prague. I had no idea what she was talking about and decided to ask others. They also didn't know. On my way out for the day I asked the girl at reception and she looked it up for me. She found it and circled it on my map. It turned out that it was between Old Town and where I'm staying so I thought I would try and find it on my way back home later in to afternoon.
So I headed to the Prague Castle and spent some time walking around there first, and then went to Old Town and grabbed a snack and a beer before searching for this post. An hour and a bit later, I had asked 3 different people, consulted 2 different maps, and still hadn't found it. Almost having given up I turned a corner and looked left to see this church, and there it was. This ugly looking lamp post, or, apparently, the world's only cubist lamp post.
The good news to come from this hunt was that I also came across Wenceslas Square, Wenceslas being the king from a commonly heard Christmas Carol. Google it and you'll know what I'm talking about.
Then it was off to have a shower before going on a river cruise. Dinner was included. It was only mediocre, but it was nice to see everything from the river. There was a thunder storm right before we got on but it passed just in time. Tonight and tomorrow should be cooler though, temperature wise.
Right before sunset:
