Slovakia-1, Nancy-0

Day 26 - Novy Smokovec, Tatras Mountains, Slovakia:

Last night we were told that the earlier we go for breakfast, the better, as there were a lot of people staying at the mountain lodge due to the music festival. I rolled out of bed and went to breakfast in my pj's around 8:30.

I wanted to read the news and do some posting online afterwards but the wifi in our room didn't seem to be working, so I took my iPad to the common foyer and sat on the couch in there by the fire. Next thing I know two Slovakian guys saunter on in and one points at me and says, "You! I need your help please to carry a bag in." So I went out to their car and helped them bring in some of their music equipment, as they were part of a band playing the festival later. You could tell that the one guy had likely been drinking since early in the morning. His eyes appeared a little blood shot. Once back inside and bags all put away, they came back down to the foyer and got me a beer for helping them out. At this time it was 10:30 am. Apparently early drinking is a common thing here in Slovakia.

The guys were actually hilarious. The drunker one was acting out what a mosquito does to try and figure out the English word, as well as teaching me how to say bad words in their language. He surprisingly knew about the Edmonton Oilers because I guess the big Slovakian player in the NHL started out playing for the Oilers. When he fell off the couch I think he realized maybe it was time to slow it down in order to be able to play later on haha.

After my morning beer I walked into town with Andy, Karren, and Steve to check out the funicular that goes up into the mountains (not to ride though, just to see) and go to the super market. I decided to stay in town and plop myself at a cafe to catch up on my journaling. I had a yummy piece of carrot cake and a latte while doing so. Then it started to spit a bit so I headed back to the lodge. I went down to see if the Tatras Music Fest had started, but it hadn't really got going yet. Sound checks mostly and little booths set up selling things. The beer gardens area was full though.

Back in my room I found Adrienne, my New Zealand mom and roomie, and Joanne (from Phoenix) just hanging out and relaxing. I decided to do the same and went and sat on the deck by the stream. A little while later the whole crew had assembled on the deck and we opened a couple bottles of wine and had the chocolate open and sat there chatting the afternoon away.

Around 5 we decided to all head down to the music grounds as it sounded like it was in full swing. We found a table in the beer gardens and grabbed a beer and some food. We had delicious and fatty sheep sausage with bread and mustard, as well as a bowl of goulash soup. Shortly after the shots started flowing. We were sitting with a really lovely family from the second biggest city of Slovakia - I can't remember the name but it's about 2 hours drive away. It was a mother and father with their daughter, Kristina, and her husband. They were teaching us all about the Slovakian liquor and how to ask for them properly. I decided to test my skills and went up to order a round of shots for everyone. We all ended up with a shot so I think I was successful. A little while later and I think most of us weren't seeing so straight anymore.

We met an awesome younger couple, Martin and Paula from Slovakia as well, so they joined the drinking squad. By this point Steve was shaking his hips to the music (we have video proof) and I could barely stand. We all made it to bed eventually - Steve apparently fell out of bed trying to get in and made a loud thump. I woke up to a trail of my clothing on the floor and half dressed on top of the covers.

I just can't keep up with the Slovaks. But it was a really fun, once in a life time kind of night and we were able to make some new friends from Slovakia!
