Market Hall Delights

Day 55 - Budapest, Hungary:

This morning sucked. I had to say goodbye to two of the greatest people I've travelled with so far. Kerry and Katherine both headed out at 2 in the afternoon today so I had to say goodbye to them this morning. I slept in a little bit and Katherine knocked on the door as soon as I was getting out of the shower of course ha. Everyone is so used to seeing me in a white towel now that it's become a running joke. Her and I chatted for a bit and then decided to meet down at breakfast. I got down there around 9:30 and said my goodbyes before sitting down to eat with Karren and Steve. So sad.

After breakfast I decided to be a true tourist and try out the hop on hop off bus. I had already done a boat tour, and walked around a lot and seen quite a bit, but I was hoping I would see a little but more by doing this. I did see a little bit more, but not a lot more. I made it down to Heroes Park further down the road that our hotel is on, and that was quite neat to see. A millennial monument resides in the middle of the square rising above everything else. Then on the top of the corner pillars there are figures that symbolize war, peace, work and welfare, and knowledge and glory. I also saw the stadium, and then the bus went across th Elizabeth bridge to the Buda side and I got to see behind the palace and go to Fisherman's Bastion, with its beautiful seven towers visible from anywhere along the river. I definitely didn't realize there were as many parks and green spaces before I did the bus ride however.

I did the full loop on the bus and then caught another line that went to the market hall. I got off there and went inside. It was a beautiful open space and everything from pastries and treats to meats, veggies and fruits was being sold. And more! Upstairs there was also all kinds of trinkets, scarves clothes, etc., that one could but. I really liked the atmosphere there so after I bought some blackberries, grapes, cherry tomatoes, and dates, I went upstairs and sat there for lunch. I had one of the most delicious gyros to date. I also ended up buying a scarf that was quite over priced, but they weren't in to bartering and I really loved the colours.

From the market I took the bus to the main shopping street and searched for a cheap new sports watch since my Timex broke when I wore it into the baths the day before (even though it's supposed to be waterproof). I didn't have any luck finding a watch however, so I walked back to the hotel. On the way I noticed a little wading pool by the Ferris wheel and walked through there to check it out. It was very hot out so it was busy with people wanting to cool off.

Once back at the hotel I had a quick shower and then de-pitted the dates and stuffed them with blue cheese for a happy hour appy. Everyone was coming to my room at 6 so I set out all of my fruit and veggies from the market and made a spread to go with the wine.

Before everyone came over I received a message from Katherine saying that Kerry had left a note for me at the front desk. I went down and got it and it was so sweet of her. I nearly cried! I'm going to miss those two.

After happy hour in my room, Steve, Karen, Andy and I went for Thai food over by where the ruins bar is. I wasn't that hungry, but it was really tasty. After that Andy and I went and met some of his friends at the ruins bar and then went over to another ruins bar that was actually way cooler looking than the one we had been going to. It was never ending and so quirky. We had one beer and then left back to the hotel. I was in bed by 11 and it was great!
