Summer Toboggan Run

Day 52 - Lake Bled, Slovenia:

I'm back to sharing a room for the time being in Slovenia. We got up around 6:30 and headed down to breakfast. At 7:30 we all met downstairs and then walked over to the bus station to go to Lake Bled. The bus ride was about an hour and a half through beautiful mountain scenery. I fell asleep for part of the ride though. I was quite tired.

When we got there the weather wasn't so great still. It was overcast and a bit chilly, but not raining. The lake was smaller than I imagined it would be for some reason, but still beautiful. There were people in little boats all on the lake and a lot of rowers. Steve, Karen, Kerry, Katherine, and I decided to do a full loop of the lake and make a stop to hike up to the castle first. At the top Kerry, Katherine and I decided to pay entrance and go into the castle to check it out. The views were stunning. You could see  the snow capped mountains in the background.

As we were leaving the castle the sun and blue skies decided to come out. It was perfect timing. We continued on with our stroll along the lake and stopped half way when we came across Karen and Steve at a cafe along the water. We continued on as a group from there. The views of the little island with a church on it in the middle of the lake just kept getting better and better as we went along.

When we first arrived we had noticed a section of the mountain that had some sort of track winding down it. Turns out that's the luge or toboggan run that anyone can do for 9 Euros. We picked up Brian along the way and then headed straight for the luge track. You have to take a chair lift up to the top and then they simply tell you that pushing the stick forward is accelerate, and backwards is your break...then go! We were all pretty keen to try it without breaking since the workers said you could, however, signs along the way told you when to break. It was so much fun. I could've done it again and again and again. You got going pretty fast!

Once we had had our adventure fun, we went and grabbed a quick sandwich and piece of the infamous Lake Bled cake (custard like and very tasty), before hurrying off to catch the 2:30 bus back.

I tried to sleep on the bus but didn't have much luck. When we got back a few of us walked over to an artsy part of town where there was a lot of really neat graffiti and murals and such all throughout the neighbourhood. It was nice and warm out by this time!

From there I walked to the hotel to grab some money before going to the super market to get groceries for the train ride the next day. I picked up some stuff for dinner as well since I was pretty tired and just wanted to relax in the evening. I also went for a little stroll to see the areas we had been earlier the previous day when it was raining and took some photos in the sunshine. It was Friday after work so it was a bustling place!

Back at the hotel I got my backpack all organized while hanging out with Joanne and Katherine in our room. I ate my salad and goulash I had bought at the supermarket and then it was shower and relax time. Bed time came early as the next morning was a 5:10am wake up to catch the train back to Budapest (9 hour journey)!
